Job Description
Summary:
This position will be responsible for providing support to attorneys in the Office of General Counsel with an emphasis on providing assistance with bankruptcy claims, debt collections and other debt matters, as well as, serving as backup for the outside counsel contract administration process.
Responsibilities:
Performs complex legal assistant work.
Work involves coordinating various legal claims; researching, analyzing, investigating and drafting legal documents; and assisting attorneys with managing a large claims docket.
Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment and maintains relevant knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions.
This includes preparing, reviewing and editing pleadings, motions, petitions, claims, legal correspondence and other legal documents.
Coordinates, assembles and prepares evidence, exhibits and documents for use in lawsuits; prepares synopses, abstracts or summaries of complex legal issues.
Assists with, finalizes, and files legal documents in the court filing systems - both state and federal court systems.
Reviews and manages collection agency contracts, amendments, renewals and extensions for university and agency clients and obtains required approvals from the Office of the Attorney General.
Drafts and responds to correspondence and opinion requests involving legal interpretations and decisions.
Researches and analyzes legal sources such as statutes, case law, administrative records, opinions, articles, treaties, property titles, and rules and regulations.
Checks citations, quotations, footnotes and reference for accuracy.
Summarizes laws, rules, and regulations.
Schedules and prioritizes attorney caseloads; organizes case files; conducts investigations and prepares chronologies and fact summaries.
Assists in drafting bill summaries for proposed legislation and tracks and analyzes relevant legislation.
Serve as backup for the outside counsel contract administration process, which includes management of documents and all administrative duties for outside counsel related matters, including but not limited to website maintenance, intake, tracking, reporting, reviewing and processing invoices, electronic submission of requests to retain outside counsel, amendments and required forms through the Office of Attorney General Community Management System; work directly with The Office of the Attorney General, outside counsel firms, system offices, agencies and university officials on outside counsel matters; ensure compliance with outside counsel guidelines, policies, requirements and procedures; assist in request for qualification process for outside counsel.
Maintains electronic files for each assigned matter.
Drafts standard letters and forms.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and
Experience:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Six years law office experience or four years law office experience with legal certification through Associate Degree or Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of legal terminology; of state and federal laws rules and regulations; of research methods and techniques; of administrative and court procedures; and of the legislative process.
Ability to conduct effective research; to draft, prepare, and interpret legal documents; to evaluate and relate findings to cases in question; to conduct investigations; and to communicate effectively both verbally and written.
Skill in understanding and processing information using word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
High proficiency in utilizing Adobe Acrobat/DC, Cisco WebEx Meetings or similar electronic meeting applications, and Microsoft Office programs, especially Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Outlook.
Strong research/analytical, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
Ability to work cooperatively with others in a professional office environment.
Preferred
Qualifications:
Experience with Westlaw, Westlaw Next, and other related computerized legal research tools.
Completion of certificate program or major coursework in law or a related field is generally preferred.
Copy of certificate required at time of interview.
